Annotations for Burn Bright

Lyric: I’d trade the world for your city nights
Annotation:
“trade” and “world” could be referring to the world trade center that was attacked on 9/11. Gerard Way witnessed the towers being hit and the experience prompted him to write ‘Skylines and Turnstiles’ and start MCR. This line could be referring to the destruction of the world trade center leading to Gerard’s fame (the city lights) since it was that event that caused him to start MCR

Lyric: We stole the fire and it’s burning bright
Annotation:
Like Prometheus who stole the fire from the gods and gave it to humans, they stole the fire of fame/ city lights and used it for good, they gave it to their fans to empower them. They used their newfound privilege (like Prometheus' privilege as a titan), their space in the limelight to help others find their own fire and light within themselves. Also, Prometheus is credited as the creator of mankind, in a way mcr by inspiring their fans made them who they are, created them. Actually, many of them eventually became artists. Gerard has talked about this: We have a legion of fans that are essentially artists, and I’d like to hope that we either attracted them or turned them onto being artists and they can take anything we’ve done and interpret it in an artistic way. Not a lot of bands are like that; https://www.altpress.com/features/mychemicalromancegerardwaymetallicainterview/

Lyric: ’Cause it makes me who I am
We lit the fire and it’s burning bright
Annotation:
The band’s message is very much about being who you are, and not being scared to do it. This song was recorded before Danger Days, but the line ‘It’s time to do it now, and do it loud’ (Look alive, sunshine/NA NA NA …) can very much being seen here. They started the band as a way of coping with their problems, but by this point thousands of people listened to them. They brought the broken, the hurt, the outcasts together, and made an army. They started a revolution, and 10 years (and counting) later, it’s still going.

Lyric: We lit the fire and it’s burning bright
Annotation:
I believe this line acts as an interesting sort of juxtaposition. Here, the band says that they were the ones who lit the fire within us, the passion to change, the passion to get up, the passion to keep going, they lit the fire of My Chemical Romance. However, later on in the song, the band says that they also stole the fire from our city nights, but I think that these are two different fires. There is the fire the band lit, which is MCR, but then there is also the fire within us which burns painfully whenever we’re going through a dark episode in our life. This line shows listeners that there are many types of flames when it comes to our emotions and stability. There are those fires of great passion and those fires of great pain, and we have to be able to distinguish between the two in order to save ourselves. However, some have a hard time doing that, and thus MCR will be there to help those that need it, stealing the fires of pain and taking it on themselves and in turn lighting the eternal torch of passion.

Lyric: If I steal the fire from your city nights
’Cause it makes me who I am
Annotation:
I believe that when MCR says they will “steal the fire from your city nights” that they mean to remove the burning anguish from your darkest nights. What they mean by “Cause I’ll never fade away” is that whenever you listen to their music, they will invigorate you, strengthen you, act as your beacon and guide you forward in your tough times, but they can only continue to exist as long as they are still helping their listeners with their music in regards to helping them through their dark times. MCR doesn’t want to make music just for the sake of it, they want to make music to help people, and that’s exactly what they mean by “Cause it makes me who I am” what makes MCR is the reason they make music – for the people that need somewhere to go, something to listen to that lets them know that they can get through whatever they’re facing. So as long as their music continues to help you through all the darkness, they will never fade away, because that is exactly what they set out to do in the first place.

Lyric: ’Cause I’ll never fade away
Annotation:
This is Gerard furthering proving that even though the band will stop touring and making music, the memories and impact they made on peoples lives will never fade away. Gerard’s life was the band so as long as people keep the memories that they made through My Chemical romance, he and the band will never truly be gone. They will live on through in the hearts and memories of their fans.

Lyric: I burned it all and I’m doing fine
Annotation:
Even though Gerard and the rest of the band are burned out and is why the band is ending, he is ultimately fine. He has his peace with the end and while My Chemical Romance is ending, the ideas, memories, and the impact it made on people will never go away and Gerard is content with that. He wants his fans to know that he will be ok and wants to reassure them that they will all be ok, even after the band ends.

Lyric: ’Cause the world don’t need another hopeless cause
Annotation:
Here is another perspective of the band coming to end. While the fans of My Chem know the true meaning behind the band and what Gerard did to keep the band going, others who only see the outside couldn’t care less. These people just see Gerard and My Chem as a lost cause or another band that will come and go, so what’s the point if they stay now? This also connects with the lines “they always told me that you’ll never go to heaven . with a life like yours” which is how people are seeing Gerard and his “rockstar” life as a lost cause. They think he is using the band for fame and money and see him as a lost cause and lost to the fame and spotlight.

Lyric: Don’t go if you’ve got more to say
Annotation:
This can be seen as one perspective of the band ending. My Chemical romance saved many lives and so many fans are trying to get them to stay. No one wants their source of happiness to leave and My Chem has been spreading awareness through their music. This can be a perspective of a fan saying “you have so much more to say that could save more people, so don’t go if you have something to say to help those homeless people”.

Lyric: Cause if you just stop breathing
I’ll stop, I’ll stop my heart
 I’ll stop breathing, too
Annotation:
These lines parallel another song off of Conventional Weapons ‘Tomorrows’ Money' with the heavy guitar and drum pattern and how, in tomorrows money, compares that while the industry is keeping the band alive, Gerard knows that the only way My Chemical Romance is going to stay alive is through the fans. Its an “idea” and as long as the fans keep that idea going, My Chem will too. Here he literally saying that if the fans “stop breathing” either meaning literally dying or just letting the band die in their past giving a metaphorical death to the fans, Gerard will also die. The band was and is Gerard no matter what because he put his whole life into it, making it a huge part of him and when the fans stop believing in My Chem, he will metaphorically die along with it.

Lyric: Did you take it? Kissed all the boys in your city lights
Did you make it? Left all the stars in your city nights
Can you fake it? I lost my way in your city lights
Annotation:
While Gerard said that this song was about the band, this line is likely speaking about his personal experience as My Chem’s frontman. “Did you take it?” is asking if he took all the oppurtunities given to him. These are likely not speaking about big music-related oppurtunities, but rather petty ones that come with a life of fame. “Did you make it?” Can you survive this life? Gerard Way admittedly struggled with substance abuse throughout the band’s lifetime, but eventually overcame it. “Can you fake it?” Not everything can be genuine; it’s hard to do your best every day. If you can’t be the person expected of you, you can pretend.

Lyric: I took the pills for these empty nights
’Cause it makes me who I am
Annotation:
This referneces Gerard’s past drug abuse and how his drug addiction was what people automatically associated and identified him as. The drugs were who he was and he acknowledges that while it was a huge part of him, he’s not ashamed of who he was because he grew from it to be better.

Lyric: It’s like a chemical burn
I’m peeling off your skin, yeah
And when you see your face
Well, you’ll never be the same again, yeah
Annotation:
Haha nice one, meta joke!! The writer is trying to bring light into the life of the listener and seeing this light involves seeing yourself as you truly are, your real face. His words peel off this mask we put on every day but once we get a glimpse of our true selves everything will change forever.

Lyric: They always told me that you’ll never get to heaven
 With a life like yours
Annotation:
Society belittles rebels in general, people who don’t blend in and tries to discourage them by putting labels like “sin” and “bad” thus perverting their comforting beliefs, obviously of the religious kind in this metaphor, denying them “heaven”.

Lyric: And though I missed the chance for this
 I confess that I can’t wait until it’s gone
Know I mean this every single day
Annotation:
It’s well known that My Chemical Romance were burnt out after the heavy schedule of The Black Parade Tour, which took them around the world for two years without a break. The Black Parade was supposed to be the end of My Chemical Romance — they didn’t even want to record the Danger Days album! However, their recording contract required them to put out another album, so they had to make one. Gerard and his bandmates were sick of the jetset life, and just wanted the chaos to end.

Lyric: So give me all you’ve got, I can take it
Annotation:
Similar to the line, Give me all your poison Give me all your pills Give all your hopeless hearts, and make me ill From “Thank You For the Venom.” Gerard vows to take whatever his fans need him to.
